Tolerance

Combating Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims a presentation by Ambassador Hemayet Uddin,

Tolerance is one of the pillars on which human civilization has been built upon. Every religion on earth preaches it; great statesmen and philosophers have been inspired by it; mass political movements have struggled to uphold it and present day democratic governments cannot function properly without it. The basic tenets of tolerance are compassion, understanding and appreciation of the right of others to differ in beliefs and faiths, cultural norms and values. These are the foundations of a civilized society and crucial for peaceful coexistence.

The Ambassador would have us believe that Islam is tolerant, the innocent victim of intolerance. Allah’s book puts the lie to that implication.

3:85. And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.

3:86. How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and after they bore witness that the Messenger (Muhammad ) is true and after clear proofs had come unto them? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers).

3:87. They are those whose recompense is that on them (rests) the Curse of Allah, of the angels, and of all mankind.

No religion other than Islam will be tolerated. Allah and the Muslims curse everyone who rejects Islam in favor of any alternative. I have quoted the Hilali & Khan translation and linked to a tabular display of nine translations so that you can verify the accuracy and meaning of the ayat.  Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir is here: The Religion with Allah is Islam

Return to the initial quote and note the highlighted phrase; the implication is that Islam recognizes and values that virtue. What does Allah’s book say about peaceful coexistence with Jews & Christians?

9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah.

9:123. O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who are the Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – see V.2:2). Qualities of the Faithful Believers and Their Refinement

Any Muslim will tell you that those ayat are taken out of context, the meaning obvious on their face is mis-interpretation.
Don’t believe them; believe Ibn Kathir, who spent his whole life studying the Qur’an, hadith & Sharia.

1.) You cited tamiynna at one point. That is athe sign of a poor scholar, since most muslims considere him utterly unreliable and jhave done so for almost the entire time that his works have been known. only hte shalafi sect heeds him with any real seriousness.

2.) There are many verses which encourage tolearnce of non muslims

Not all of them are alike; a party of the people of the Scripture stand for the right, they recite the Verses of God during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves in prayer. They believe in God and the Last Day; they enjoin Al-Ma’rûf and forbid Al-Munkar ; and they hasten in (all) good works; and they are among the righteous. And whatever good they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for God knows well those who are Al-Muttaqûn .(3:113-115)
And there are, certainly, among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), those who believe in God and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before God. They do not sell the Verses of God for a little price, for them is a reward with their Lord. Surely, God is Swift in account. ‘(3:199)’
Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve . [Qur’an 2:62]
Say (O Muhammad ): “O people of the Scripture : Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but God, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides God. [Qur’an 3:64].

You are partially correct in that the jizya was utterly asinine, but the quran never described worldly punishment for apostasy. Also, aside from the jizya, the jews actulaly had it fairly esay. Certainly more so then in christian europe where they were brutally murdered on a daily basis

There are many tasfirs, and many interpretaions. KAthir is not the be all and end all.
